In a wide-mouthed one-quart sterilized mason jar, combine the sugar and vodka. Suspend a medium-sized piece of cheesecloth over the jar and place the orange in it. Lower the cheesecloth and orange into the jar until it is suspended over the vodka without touching it. Close and seal the jar. Let stand for 2 months in a cool, dry place. When you open the jar, throw away the cheesecloth and orange, which will have turned black. Serve the vodka as an after-dinner drink.
